Sophia Huang Xueqin reported released after five years, but friends say they cannot reach her

The Guardian reports that journalist and feminist activist Sophia Huang Xueqin left prison on September 18 after completing a five-year sentence; supporters say they still cannot reach her, leaving her whereabouts and post-release restrictions unconfirmed.

WHY IT MATTERS

Completion of a prison term does not necessarily restore freedom of expression, communication or movement. Huang also received four years' deprivation of political rights, making her ability to communicate and work after release directly relevant to press freedom and the treatment of human rights defenders.

Full report

The Guardian reported on September 20 that journalist and Chinese #MeToo activist Sophia Huang Xueqin had been released on September 18, nearly five years after she was detained in Guangzhou on September 19, 2021. Reporting on her 2024 judgment also listed September 18, 2026 as the end of her prison term.[1][3]

The same report cited a September 19 statement from supporters saying that friends had not been able to contact Huang or receive information from her and that her whereabouts were unknown at that time. China Rights Record therefore classifies this entry as developing: a reliable news organization reports that she left prison at the end of her sentence, but that does not establish that she has regained freedom of communication, movement or journalistic work.[1]

Huang was detained together with labour-rights activist Wang Jianbing in 2021. In 2024 she was sentenced to five years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power,” fined 100,000 yuan and given an additional four years' deprivation of political rights. International organizations argue that the case arose from her journalism, feminist advocacy and civil-society activity, and have warned about possible surveillance, harassment and movement restrictions after release. Those statements are advocacy assessments, not independent proof of her current conditions.[2][3]

The Guardian also cited the Chinese government's general position that the country has made “historic” progress on women's rights. In the public reporting reviewed for this record, authorities had not given a specific account of Huang's post-release whereabouts or ability to communicate. This record will be updated if verifiable information emerges from Huang, her family, lawyers or other independent sources.[1]
